If you are buying a dresser, buffet, nightstand or any furniture piece that has drawers similar structural questions apply. While the style and finish are important there are other things to consider. Do the drawers have a slide locking system that prevents them from opening all the way and falling out? This is especially important if you have young children or elderly parents living in the home. Can the dresser be mounted to the wall for safety purposes? Does the dresser have easy glide drawers that open and close smoothly? Antique or hand-me-down items will not always conform to safety standards so beware of placing used furniture in a child's area.
There are also motifs derived from ancient Greek and Roman design. Vases, lamps, torches, heads of Greek gods, ram's head and cornucopias are among the many Greek and Roman inspired decorations incorporated into the Empire style of furniture. French Patriotism grew stronger during Napoleon's rule and it was evident in the many patriotically inspired decorations which included laurel wreaths, eagles, swords, lances, rifles, drum and bugles. The use of legs that are shaped like animals or sphinxes is very typical to the Empire style. The graceful cabriole legs of the previous styles have been replaced with the massive, more often overstated and vulgar use of legs that are shaped like animals.
Cane furniture continues to be a favorite export items to all major developed nations as the raw material is mostly grown in tropical countries. However, furniture manufacturers all over the world, realized the growing importance of cane long ago, and made the necessary business arrangements to import raw cane to finish the furniture products in their home base. The cane furniture designs widely vary from country to country and the designs emanating western markets are to a large degree, inspired by 17th.century England.
