I've actually heard quite a bit about 'language assistants' being hired in France. It's like ESL, here, excepting not needing a degree - just fluency in English. And from what I've read, they positions often are offered for six or nine month contracts, only 12 hours of work a week, come with loaded vacation and other benefits and pay...well...enough to afford to not have to freelance. And often, contracts are renewed, if the assistant is ammenable to it.

So, I'll be doing more research about those, for sure.

As for the bangs, I'll totally have to blow-dry them - I have a cowlick on each side of my forehead (Z inherited them, too), and my hair's texture would mean that without it, from wet they'd dry frizzy. Which is a hassle, but would take all of, what, two minutes?

Thanks for the kind words!

See, now I think Chinese would be so hard to learn/teach. For some reason, because I've been scolding Zoë in French for her whole life, it seems like it would be easier. Thus far, she can count to five and say hello. I think we're gonna need more time! :P

I think moving to Paris is totally feasible, and may even prove to be beneficial. If you do your research and save your monies, why not? You only live once.

I, too, am planning on taking my family overseas when my son is around 7 or so. Seeing as how I have already spent almost a total of two years of my life living overseas in various places, I do not consider it an impossibility, or even something difficult to achieve, it is merely something I want to do, and will do. And France is tops on my list, too. My boy MUST experience Paris.

Have you considered volunteering? It is not something I have done yet, but I am considering it and researching it right now. May I direct you to a few websites that I have been looking at?

http://www.geovisions.org/pages/431_conversatio...

http://www.unitedplanet.org/volunteer-in-france...

And of, course, there is always WWOOFING

http://www.wwoof.fr/

Most of these volunteer opportunities aren't really geared toward families, but it is something worth looking into.

Bonne Chance!

i'm a huge supporter of bangs. the only negative about them is that depending on your hair type, you may have to brush and blow dry them out every morning (i have to) or the cowlicks take over...
and in the hot weather they suck because you get forehead sweat, which translates to forehead zits. which sucks.
but i still rock the bangs most of the time and love them.

but back to the paris thing.... i don't really see why it wouldn't be a real possibility. the biggest hurdles would be money for airfare and accommodations while you're there... and while it's annoying to scrimp and save... it's doable based on your level of commitment.
the biggest obstacle, i think, is the visa thing.. if you're planning on working while you're there, you need to obtain a work visa, which generally mean you need to be sponsored by a company and have your job before you depart. there are working visas available for youth, but you have to be under 30 years old to get them, so that's out.
without the visa, you're going to be allowed in france for only 90 days. so, you could still have a kick ass 3 month vacation, but wouldn't really be legally allowed to "move" there.
i don't know about the logistics of getting zoe into school there... but i'd assume if you have a work visa, you'd be allowed to enroll her in school while you're living & working there... and as long as you're paying taxes there.
