On Girl Talk Thursday: Twilight

Sure. The first act of participating and I’ve gotta talk about vampires. Actually, scratch that, that is quite fitting when you consider that I started reading horror at seven, got off on sadistic blood scenes (not Harlequins) at 15 and read all four books of the Twilight within (I think it was) three days.

I totally sold my kid out to read those damn 15 pound epics. Sagas of…well, poor writing.

I mean, come on, it wasn’t craftily woven, it wasn’t screaming talent, it was pure addiction. I was jonseing to get away from Bella’s whining about the rain – seriously, Bella, fuck off, lots of us get rained on – and waiting with bated breath to read about them getting it on.

(shit. I just spoke to a fictional character on my blog. Where’s the meds?)

Anyways. About the Edward/Bella horizontal mambo [(though I highly doubt it was merely horizontal, or a mambo - he is a vampire whose been trapped in a, what, 17-year old's body for a long time. Do you know what that means? Drive of a 17 year old boy, but a hundred years experience. Pretty much the opposite of most devirginizing stories you've heard.) am I going to break someone's heart if I talk about more than the first book? If so, spoiler], I saw that coming. It was the most obvious about-to-happen thing ever. But damn, did I have to read a lot of whining for it. And then? Seriously? That’s all I got? That was some disappointment.

You’d think it was a teen book or something.

Oh. Wait.

So. That was a few months ago.

I read. I gave away my copies and I promptly got over it.

With each friend that saw the movie once, or multiple times – you know who you are, you, you and especially YOU – I got less into seeing it. Then someone said meh about it and I was even more less interested – said meher has given me wicked good movie suggestions, eh?

Then I was at the movie store with Isobel and JDawg last Saturday and we were getting three new releases. It was magically, for no reason known to me, my first pick. He definitely didn’t wanna see it, Isobel was cool with watching anything that meant she could stay up later and I…have no clue, but definitely wasn’t excited to see it.

There was no hyperventilation. No must-buy-this. It was alright. Not that great. What’d I get out of it?

About 75% of the way through, a sudden urge.

Vampires. They always do it to for me.

  • havent read them yet...I havent even read harry potter. Im a looooooser and only read the classics and pretentious books of whimsy lol kidding. I need to read the twilight! I feel left out :p
  • Heh. It's a fun, quick read. Kind of like chick lit, minus the scandalous sex. You know, the best part?
  • Edward needed to lighten up a bit. He's cute and all, but I couldn't imagine just doing normal things with him. Like drinking Budweiser and watching SNL.

  • Yeah, he'd definitely not be into the Buds. Maybe, like, a gentle cab sav.
  • ha, yeah I think Coral has seen the movie more than once :-)

  • But how many times have YOU seen it?
  • I agree, the books were very recipie-driven and after the second or third one, it was easy to see the story arch/pattern. It just got predictable. Granted, it didn't stop me from reading them voraciously and hanging out with a bunch of LDS tweens in a southern Utah berg to get the last tome. It was a fun read and anytime a book can blow up by skirt a bit, I'll bite (excuse the pun).

Here's to hoping the next movie gets better funding and better effects.

  • Well, part of it IS filmed here. And only good things are made in Vancouver and Tofino. Well, I guess that includes Pamela Anderson and Bryan Adams. Bygones.
  • Yeah, I wasn't so into the movie. It would have been less so if I hadn't read the books. I hope you got your urge AFTER the stupid sparkley skin moment - it bugs me that he didn't have giant beams of light radiating from his chest, and instead glittered like a sad little disco ball.

Yeah, okay, that's like a drop of water in the ocean of all that failed in the movie. Glad you DID get something out of it, though. :)

  • And seriously, if you know you're going to have an open shirt in a movie, and your skin's going to be glistening like a badly oiled porn star? Do some bench presses.
  • AGREED, Though I haven't seen the movie yet, my 12 year old (he's TWELVE) is thinking about borrowing it from "some chick" at school, because apparently, it's "pretty sick". I think that is a good thing.

This is what life has come to for me.

In other news: I gave you a Kreativ Blogger Award!! (Come and get it)!!
  • Thank you! Also, when I hear people say "that's so sick" about something, I totally want to comb their hair flat and straighten their collars after giving them a vulcan grip. SICK is my least favourite cool word :P
  • Ugh, I hated the movie. Let me make a face that looks like I'm in pain for the next 87 minutes and call it a day.

  • Hey, that's totally possible. I mean, imagine being around someone who literally stinks for 87 minutes straight.
  • Heh. I've quite a few friends who've read & watched. Despite the hot that is "R. Patz", I've not gone there. ;p
My time, it is limited. Or perhaps rather, I've just got too many people I like to keep up with. :P

Anyhow, yeah, Vampires. I read quite a lot of Anne Rice in HS. ;p

  • You've given me a costuming idea for blogHer. On the other hand - nobody likes a fat vampire. I'll just have to take my chances and go normal. Glad you had a pleasant evening -- dry spell over, huh?

  • those books were so badly written they were annoying to read. but it was a good idea, so that saved it.
needed more sex though. so disappointed in the sex.
