shhh!

This new nightly routine of Isobel waking two hours after falling asleep? Draining and putting a cramp in my cleaning habits. So, because the newly ordained queen of cling is now not down with me like, doing stuff, when she’s amidst the apartment, I really only have the times when she’s in her high chair or sleeping to clean up ’round here.

My dishes? I’ve barely dented them in a couple of days.

And once the wake up occurs, I don’t want to make noise for fear of further wakings and then literally doing nothing except rocking back and forth for hours upon hours.

And whenever this happens, my kitchen gets out of control messy, it causes me to sit and reflect (mostly because it’s the quietest thing that I can do). And so, with this introversion and inspiration from Mr Lady and recently, Huckdoll, I have a confession.

It started when Isobel was a tiny, mewling, colicky old man in a carrier. I got bored. She didn’t do anything but eat boobs, poop and scream – even watching her sleeping was more interesting that those other three – so I started going out at all opportunity. This is probably how I got in so deep with a certain *cough* coffee chain and I know it led to what I’m going to tell you:

I grocery shop pretty much everyday. I buy whatever is on sale that looks like it will be useful down the road. Everything becomes a staple, it seems like and because of this…I’ve got these packed cupboards and freezer and it consistently feels like I have no food.

Because of how I grew up, in part, I’m incapable of buying anything but produce and dairy at the regular price. But this stubbornness is leading us down a weird and twisted path, one that comes full circle, back to having ‘no’ food and therefore needing to go to the store, again.

So, we’ll try my own little experiment. I’m going to clean out all of the crap from my food storage receptacles. I’ll combo things you’ve never thought of and I’ll use a lot of frozen vegetables while doing it (since they take up about half of the packed freezer). I’ll only buy those bare minimum needed essentials until I legitimately have no food and need to go shopping. I’ll let you know how it’s going, as it’s going.

Tonight it was just the two of us so Queen Clingy and I had a no effort, little-nutrition dinner of Lipton Sidekicks Mexican Rice with some frozen corn, for like, colour (Sidekicks were on sale a couple of weeks ago and she hearts it, so I bought the week’s maximum of assorted kinds.) All of the six bites I got to eat of it before my client showed up were a wonderful amalgamation of grease, spice and corn. Just the way I like it.

  • I never have any food and always need to go shopping. It's a habit I picked up from living in that city - just buying a bag or two every couple of days. Mexican Sidekick sounds scrumptious.
